Joy’s Community Project

Joy’s Community Project

I had the opportunity to help Joy on her last workshop for her community project on Saturday, April 23rd. Her targeted community was transfer students living in Unit 2.  About 4 people, men and women, showed up for our workshop on Safer Sex and Consent.  We had a smaller group but it probably had to do with the fact that it was on a Saturday at 12pm (which is when most of us wake up).

We started off the workshop with an ice breaker, where everyone had to choose a sexy name.  We then went into Safer Sex, which was the first part of our workshop.  In that topic we mentioned barrier methods, contraceptives, different types of lubrication, STIs/ STDs, preventing infections and getting tested.  During this first part, I also did my best of doing an insertive condom demonstration with a traditional condom because we did not have insertive condoms with us, it actually went fairly well especially because Joy included an image of one in the PowerPoint, which gave everyone an idea of what it looked like.  After we talked about testing and STIs/STDs, we went right into talking about consent.  During this part of the workshop, we asked everyone what they thought consent was and they kind of built on each other’s definition and they ultimately came up with the definition we had prepared. We also talked about affirmative consent, some examples of it, and how a person can still say no at any time to any activity they do not feel comfortable with.  In the end, we finished a bit early and took a few more questions and had some people do condom demos to refresh their memory from Joy’s first workshop and show another person who hadn’t gone to the first one.  The group was really friendly and interactive, a really workshop overall.
